Announcement description

The aim of this proposal is developing an innovative family of sensors designed to be integrated into A.I. and dedicated to the autonomous driving of land robotic vehicles in the open field (outdoors) including cultivated fields, swamps, woods, mountain areas and man-made environments. Among the wide R&D opportunities in the outdoor autonomous navigation field, the development of an adhoc radar technology is very challenging for leveraging the Italian ecosystem of expertise in this field, particularly, for enabling radar sensors for land vehicles for surveillance, logistics and territory control. The technology could be made up of innovative hardware and artificial intelligence designed to increase the autonomous driving capacity of robots in complex and challenging outdoor environments, hitherto forbidden to operate robots. In particular, the hardware may consist of a multi-frequency radar antenna, a calculation unit for data processing and connection interfaces with external devices. The computing unit can be used to implement control logics, neural networks or decision-making algorithms. This proposal is a great occasion to go beyond the state of the art for improving the robotic capabilities in navigation, that are nowadays based on the combination of video and laser technologies, by further combining radar technology and artificial intelligence.
